I don’t get your questions. Are you worried that nearly all contributions are made by one company? Then take a look at the contributors for the scanner Contributors to greenbone/openvas-scanner · GitHub too. Greenbone is the main contributor for several years now. That’s also the reason for our current renaming efforts.

Thank you for the pointer and for asking, because this could help to clarify certain aspects.

First, I’m sorry for the strange formatting of my post, this wasn’t meant as “shouting” at all, but happened inadvertently, I should have used tags for the “code” parts.

You captured the initial worry, which prompted me to look at the question, quite well.
That is certainly nothing new to many of the readers, since OpenVAS started as a fork from another project (Nessus) which shut down parts of it’s public participation.
So “could the same thing happen here” is a natural question to ask once one considers using a product for longer.

In a way my post contains answers to it’s own questions.

Once I saw the result of my “query”, it became immediately obvious that greenbone carried a heavy charge for a long time already.
The obvious, well earned and, as far as I see, apparently accelerating success seems like a just return for many years of diligent work in an exciting environment of freedom, a freedom presenting all of us with the rewards and the problems of how everybody manages the inherent tensions of collaboration, individuality, giving and taking, which touches more fundamental and hard-to-grasp questions and of what is perceived as just or might be unjust, e.g. touching deeper questions of conscience (and thus also ideology/religion) which nobody can escape the personal responsability for in her/his life, and which are of course connected to trust, which is the basis of collaboration in any environment of freedom, which we all all need and strive for (if unconsciously for certain parts of the population), especially in IT and it’s connections to surveillance and privacy, use, benefits and misuse of power vs. helping others, etc. etc.

I also noticed that OpenVAS is part of the SPI (Software for the Oublic Interest) initiative, so there is a public formalization of accepting the corresponding formal policies (while it might at the same time leave it open to influences of the legislation of where that organisation is located, but well, for now I’d like to not go too deep it this branch since there are somme well-known and well-respected people working in it which helps create trust at this aspect).

The help from BSI, which might have been instrumental in greenbone’s success, also implies some moral obligation because it means benefitting from public funding (german taxpayer’s money), while it might at the some time create doubts in parts of the (potential or actual) user base, and improve trust in other parts of it.

BTW, is the name “greenbone”, which sticks out well as a logo/name, coming from the fish named “Odax pullus”, thus some NZ connection? I didn’t find a forum category for that question of the origin of that name, so I “sidecar” it here.

I also like to say that digging into these questions is quite an experience. I’m quite grateful for the work done and shared, because it helps to secure networks, and that feels. greensbone’s CEO makes a very good impression on the video sequences I saw, which certainly helped building my trust. You (bricks) and the other posters@greenbone also do that in your own ways. Kudos for well managing the difficult line between the commercial and the community aspects of the endeavor, there isn’t anything regarding that aspect I could complain about at this time, quite the contrary indeed, it shows a lot of wisdom and experience of all these fields.

So, why did I post then after seeing all this?

Because I consider OpenVAS an important tool, which the appreciations of SPI and BSI, as well as your customer base, are an attestation to, but also the integration in “uncoordinated” derivates. This tool ecosystem helped me to relieve certain worries, so I do care and want to give back something, in my unique own way of course, which is evolving all the time like (hopefully) everybody’s.

So the existence of the derivates is creating trust as well, that’s why it’s very important that they exist. And also, because a “single” point of failure could be the opposite of sustainability and resilience, which most of us will want in their using IT. From the result of my looking into the origin of the VTs it somewhat appears that “The Community” may not be that much of a community as one might hope for – but on the other hand, I cannot think of excluding the enterprise environment of The Community as such, since I reject thinking of humanity as being devided, because we’re all connected and even dependent from each other in one way or another, even glued together as One, if we like it or not. The security problems of IT worldwide slowly help to make this aspect of a common, unique humanity obvious to everybody on earth. Which is great, because it forces people to become conscious of our interdependency, and that we all should use our fundamental innate creativity to lovingly contribute our best to all of us in one way or another, as is the freedom/responsability of everyone of us.

Since capturing a running program counter, on it’s long run in it’s memory’s way filled by so many people, is so easy, trust, competence and due diligence is required by all those feeding said ways. It’s really somewhat a metapher for all of us also running in our life’s ways also filled by so many people (including ourselves), due diligence is required in our interactions as well. Both need vetting what we let in, which is why I’m looking at the environment, as many people are doing much of the time.

So, in the end, maybe I’m just stating the obvious for many people, but maybe this can also help some important aspects being more explicit and help some people deepening their appreciations of what we all are doing here and how we work and live together.

I also wondered myself if my post were some kind of “wake up call” for “The Community”, but who am I to tell anybody to wake up, besides (maybe) myself?
So I guess that this may be my way of searching how to participate and of participating in our common ecosystem. Which is work in progress.
I thought the result of my “research” and how I look at it might be useful for at least some people.
