Osp_scanner crashing after multiple scans queued

Hi all,

Trying to set up a perfect Greenbone installation, but having issues with the scanning of multiple hosts.

I would like to manually kick off multiple scans at the same time (they may run in sequence instead of parallel), but everytime I do that the ospd-openvas is crashing. If I do a manual scan, like 2 or 3 hosts everything is working fine, but if I scan 4 hosts or more it crashes.

Can I somehow limit that all scans remain queued until the first 2 scans are done?

Please guide me in the right direction! :slight_smile: Thanks.

Hi,

please always format your output with backticks ```

Could you please also paste the output of the ospd-openvas log? It’s more interesting then the gvmd logs in this case.

Combining those two outputs my guess is that you have a problem with the SHA256 hashes that are used to verify the various Notus scan families before they run. Seems these hashes are not loading correctly.

This file is located here: /var/lib/notus/advisories/sha256sums. You should verify that file exists and that the gvm user has the correct permissions for it. On Kali the owner should be _gvm on source code install it is just gvm.

Hi Joseph,

These files are there with the same file size as you posted.

They are owned by gvm which is correct as I have the git installation.

Any other suggestions?

Edwin

Can you describe your installation method, environment, and the system resources?

It’s a Debian Trixie(testing), fully patched/upgraded (but the issue was already there when it was bookworm(stable).

It’s running as VM in Hyper-V with the following resources:
8x Intel(R) Xeon(R) Silver 4208 CPU @ 2.10GHz
8Gb memory (free 5Gb)

Greenbone has been compiled from Git
I followed this guide: https://greenbone.github.io/docs/latest/22.4/source-build/index.html

There are several ways to limit the resources used by the scanning engine.

  • You can broadly limit the number concurrently scanned hosts in the /etc/openvas/openvas.conf configuration file. See here for options to limit using that method.

  • You can also override those limits by setting the number of scanned hosts and NVTs per host in each scan task configuration. See screenshot below.

I have changed both the config and all scan tasks (set max concurrent scanned hosts to 1).

I have added
max_hosts = 1
max_checks = 2
to /etc/openvas/openvas.conf

Something changed… the server is no longer crashing, but it is still starting way to many openvas processes at the same time:

I do see, that i have one (1) task for each host, are I making a wrong asumption that each host needs it own task?
