Only TCP-SYN Service Ping works

hello…

i have a fresh install of a openvas 9 on an aws cent os instance.
have tested scanning other instances - all controlled by me - and the only “Alive Test” setting that works is “TCP-SYN Service Ping” (the “good setting”). tried all of them. also tried the “wizard” to setup a “full and very deep ultimate” scan. all scans - except the ones using the “good setting” - end in less than a minute with no results. the only result the “good setting” produces is a “low severity” result “NVT: TCP timestamps”…

what should i do or change so i can get a “full and very deep ultimate” scan to work as expected…

thanks…

Hi, when choosing the category for a topic please try to have a look at the category description for each category first:

The current used category is/was https://community.greenbone.net/c/vulnerability-tests (Description: About the Vulnerability Tests category) which is about vulnerability tests (the so called “NASL scripts”).

Based on your questions it seems to be relevant to the OpenVAS/GVM configuration/setup or some networking/environmental issues and not a vulnerability test itself. For such questions the https://community.greenbone.net/c/gse (Description: About the Source Edition (GSE) category) needs to be chosen.

I have moved the topic to the correct category for now. It could be possible that the info above is made more prominent / easier to find in the future.

hi cfi… thanks for the explanation… new to the forums. was using the mailing list which apparently is no longer an option…

thanks for moving my post into the correct category…

ok… hello… so… looked around the logs… here is what i found in openvassd.log:

(scan run as:
OpenVAS Default (Type: OpenVAS Scanner)
Scan Config: Full and fast
)

what’s next?

Hi,

try to compare your current used OpenVAS/GVM components (see Hint: How to compare the current used versions of the OpenVAS/GVM packages with the GVM-9 stable release?) with the GVM-9 (stable, initial release 2017-03-07) ones.

Most likely you’re running outdated components which are affected by a variant of Community feed unusable which got fixed in newer releases.
