Is it possible to scan devices with private IP in external network?

Can OpenVAS scan external network after giving public IP of it or I have to install OpenVAS on device/virtual machine inside this network?

The better way is place a sensor and just tunnel the sensor traffic via VPN. You will mess your scans up due to Proxy.ID, ARP, Proxy-ARP, Firewall-Session Limits and many other factors they will mess your scan via VPN up.

The best way is to use the master-sensor setup.
