Hello everyone,
I am new to Greenbone Community Editions and in this community too.
I want to install Greenbone Community Editions into a PC which has Windows or, Ubuntu OS. Queries are -
Does the Greenbone Community Editions supports Windows or, Ubuntu OS?
Is that a *ova file or *exe or other type of file?
Exactly from where I can have the Greenbone Community Editions License?
The licence for each Greenbone component can be found from it’s GitHub page. For example, here is a copy of the licence for openvas-scanner.
Greenbone’s community documentation shows all the supported installation methods with guides - Ubuntu is is a supported distro for the source code install method and community containers. The community containers may function on Windows with WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux) version 2 installed and they may also function on macOS since Docker is supposed to be cross-platform.
OVA virtual machines are not available for the community edition but they are availalbe for Enterprise editions such as Greenbone Free and Greenbone Basic. These virtual machines are fully cross platform with Oracle VirtualBox or VMware Workstation Player.
There are 3 ways to use this edition –
1.Building from the source
2.Greenbone Community Containers
Greenbone Community Edition from pre-built container images using Docker. It consists of a distributed service architecture, where each service is run in a dedicated container. The orchestration of these services is done via a docker-compose file.
3.Kali Linux Install guide
I like to use second procedure (Greenbone Community Containers) on Ubuntu OS. Any suggestion from You?
Hi, @Deadlock4400 I’m not sure what kind of advice you are looking for. The best installation depends on your preference and use-case requirements. I prefer the Kali Linux for day-to-day use, but I do need the source code build for investigating lower level operations. Kali Linux version is usually a few minor versions behind the most recent GitHub commits, but offers a reliable and easy installation. I would avoid the source code build unless you plan to do development or really want to test out the most recent changes, but if that is within your goals then so be it.
Finally, the docker containers are sort of in the middle. They are updated frequently, and new images can be pulled easily. However, for me investigating logs or other tasks are less familiar for me in the Community Containers. I hope that helps.
Hello @rippledj ,
About Greenbone Community Container Edition, I have queries -
1.How can I change the URL which is 127.0.0.1 (Loopback IP Address)?
2.How to access the Web URL of Greenbone from a browser which is on a Windows PC?
3.After the installation of Greenbone Community Container Edition, the Community Feed was showing current. But after 5 days that not showing so! Now is that Community Feed update procedure is automatic, or for the update purpose there are some procedures?
4.Does those containers need to be update or upgrade? If YES then what is the procedure?
5.If the Ubuntu OS is restarted then will that Greenbone Community Container Edition work well again?
It seems these questions have been already (mostly) asked in a dedicated thread and are unrelated to the original topic i would suggest to keep them in the existing thread.
