Will I now have to run sudo systemctl start gvmd?

yes. if you get errors take a look at /var/log/gvm/gvmd.log.

Ok, I presume that worked.

So I guess I just need to wait for these to sync now?

Yes you need to wait until the update process has finished. Depending on your setup this takes some time up to hours.
